We might think that the determinants which result in our losing someone we love as pure misfortune, and in one sense it clearly is. Yet, there is another way to consider this — the loss is just one part of the truth of our experience. That we were fortunate enough to have had a relationship with someone with whom we enjoyed sharing a significant part of our journey is also a vital part, in fact the most important part, of what’s true.
As we experience painful feelings when we lose a person whom we loved and cherished, it is important to also be aware of how lucky we are to have found that person to begin with. The depth of our sense of loss and sadness is inexorably and proportionately connected to the great fortune of the find. The only way to shield ourselves from such pain would be to not partake in the joys that make life worth living. Being mindful that our sadness is but one part of an equation can help give us a clearer perspective on our experience.
