Many fear that to regard their personal behavior as not originating from them would cause them to experience fatalistic thoughts and debilitating feelings such as ineffectuality, meaninglessness, complacency, self-pity, hopelessness, abject futility and interminable malaise. These fears are unfounded.
In actuality, no intellectual understanding can disrupt our compelling human need to act upon our world. No one can just freeze and watch what will happen as the inescapable trajectories of their determinants play out. Rather than causing us to enter into a fatalistic malaise, an appreciation of the decisive role that our determinants play in our lives recognizes that humans are as capable of exercising power as anything in our universe.
