For our system to truely enact progressive change that will last, a substantial majority of our compatriots must agree. Without widespread support, the only other way that sweeping progressive change could occur has far more potential to be disastrous then beneficial, involving the ascension of a vanguard who forcibly imposes their will upon the many. Judging from history, the chances of such a path turning out well is essentially zero.
As greatly as change is needed, considering the tremendous divide between our fellow citizens, the only way forward not involving half our country forcing something down the throat of the other half is if we can change our underlying beliefs – and for this Naturalistic Humanism is ideally suited.
From a Naturalistic Humanist perspective the way change is accomplished is as important as the change itself. Since all outcomes are the inexorable result of the determinants which precede them, it is a mistake to single mindedly focus on an outcome itself without concern for the process through which it is achieved. Rather than being focused on arriving at a destination, our journey there is what really matters. We can forget about ever becoming a more equitable, just, kinder, and loving society if our path to getting there is filled with anger and brutality.
