In Naturalistic Humanism being conscious of the inviolable connection between the moment we are in and everything that led to it is called metawareness — a portmanteau of the words meta (which refers to a perspective that is “transcendent” or “beyond”) and awareness. Simply put, metawareness is the recognition that every moment is the inescapable result of all which precedes it. This supports the consequential understanding that human behavior is fully caused, and that, given everything leading up to a particular moment, we always behave in the only way possible. Metawareness confers significant benefits including impelling us to recognize that our journey is more important than our destination; inspiring us to live in the moment; cultivating deeper empathy and humility, and helping us navigate life’s challenges with serenity.
