Technology has enabled humans to amplify and extend our natural sensory capacity with devices like reading glasses, telescopes, microscopes, sound amplifiers, electronic mass communication, and computers.
Our technology also has enabled us to approximate versions of some of the sensory modes which are not native to humans including infer-red sensing, echo location, and ultra violet sensing but compared to how these function in the animals in which they organically evolved, our human versions are rudimentary.
We still have a great deal to learn from our fellow non-human animals.
In an entire field of study known as “biomimicry” or “bio-inspiration” human technology is inspired by the innumerable ways that animals function. Examples include the elephant’s trunk inspiring a better robotic arm and slug secretion as a potential surgical adhesive which human bodies won’t reject. And recent close study of dolphins and bats have enabled humans to significantly improve our echo-location technology.
